BMW i3 or BMW iX3: Which New Electric BMW Is Right for You?

The new BMW i3 Saloon and BMW iX3 are the first two production models of BMW’s Neue Klasse generation. Both bring new electric technology and BMW Panoramic iDrive, but they suit different needs. If you’re deciding which to explore, start with the journeys you make and the space you use every day.

Choose the BMW i3 for an electric sports saloon

The new BMW i3 brings a fully electric drivetrain to the familiar shape of a BMW sports saloon. Its lower profile may appeal if you enjoy a saloon’s driving position and want an electric car for daily travel and longer journeys.

The BMW i3 50 xDrive has two electric motors and all-wheel drive. BMW quotes a provisional electric range of over 500 miles, depending on model and specification, with rapid charging available at a compatible high-power charger. The i3 50 xDrive First Edition is available to order ahead of the wider model range.

Choose the BMW iX3 for SUV space and versatility

If you prefer a higher seating position or regularly carry bulky luggage, take a closer look at the new BMW iX3. Its SUV body offers flexible rear seating, a luggage compartment that expands to up to 1,750 litres with the rear seats folded, and additional storage beneath the bonnet.

BMW quotes a range of up to 500 miles for the iX3 model range, depending on version and equipment. The iX3 is available to test drive, making it the easier of the two to experience in person right now.

What do they have in common?

Both models introduce BMW’s latest electric vehicle technology, including 800-volt architecture designed to support rapid charging. They also feature BMW Panoramic iDrive, which presents information across the lower portion of the windscreen.
For either car, published range and charging figures are a starting point. Your real-world results will depend on factors such as temperature, driving style, vehicle specification and the charger you use. A conversation about your usual journeys will tell you more than the headline range figure alone.

Which should you explore first?

Start with the i3 if you want a fully electric saloon and are happy to discuss an upcoming model. Start with the iX3 if a higher driving position, flexible luggage space or a test drive now matters more to you.
